Perhaps no other street in York evokes the feeling of medieval life more vividly than the city's most famous street, The Shambles. The name 'Shambles' comes from the Saxon 'Fleshamels', meaning: 'the street of the butchers'. For centuries the city's meat market was located here, and even today there are tell tale signs of the street's past: meat hooks, the large windows for meat to be displayed and even a few 'shamels'. The narrow cobbled street attracts tourists like a magnet. It boasts wonderful examples of medieval building at its best - huddled so close together that they give the impression of propping each other up! The shop windows in this model illuminate, adding a lovely warm atmosphere to the wonderfully nostalgic setting of SHOPPING IN THE SHAMBLES. 10.5H x 17.5W x 19.5D cm.
